I inherited a dining set from my parents, it’s very traditional and ornate and I love it but it’s made from mahogany and just doesn’t look right in my dining room. I thought I could paint it but not sure if I would end up totally ruining it. What do you think?

If you’re not going to use it as it is I don’t see you have anything to lose by giving it a go! You will need to use a specialist wood paint in order to get a really professional finish. I think the best way to do this is to use a spray paint so you don’t end up with brush marks. Check out the range at Plasti-kote (www.plastikote.co.uk) they’ve got loads of colours in a range of finishes.
You’ll probably need to use some sort of primer first and I’d recommend doing it outside – you don’t want to get overwhelmed by paint fumes! They also sell a paint called Crackle Touch which is a topcoat and could be ideal for you to fit in with your shabby chic scheme. Good luck!

Well painting a dining set doesn’t sound good to me well yes if you are planning to put it as a show-piece then you can otherwise don’t do it.

It’s a great way of revamping old furniture alternatively you could always stick it on eBay and buy a new set with your profits!
