Qinghai Painted Blanket Trunk
Back in the day presenting a couple with furniture such as this was often part of the wedding dowry. Chests like these were given and stuffed with various items as part of a gift.
This particular chest is originally from the Qinghai province of China and was made around the 1860s. It's lived out a full life, judging from the distressed black lacquer finish it carries. However, it's this distressed and worn out look that gives it so much character and life as well.
The paintings on the front are still clear although they are now worn out. Most of these are flowers and butterflies, the latter being a symbol of happiness in marital life. Hence, it was a popular motif for wedding chests like this one.
The old hardware for this one is new but apart from that, much of the item is original. If you want something different and with character, you'll need to get this one. It's a beauty.
